miles, the house manager for the wilma, let me in to see the closing show of
big love for free. i sat right in the front row.
socially and politically messaged, it was about these 50 grecian sisters who, on their shared wedding day, flee to italy to avoid their pre-arranged marriages to their cousins. they are taken in as refugees by the owner of the land they come upon, but come to realize that they cannot avoid these fellows who track them down. after the re-commencement of the ceremony despite their opposition, the women band together to form a society of their own and play by their own rules.
first off, the set was incredible. and the writing/directing/acting was very shocking and exaggerated: not quite over- to absurdity, but enough to rise above realism to serious comedy. i say this because they went to a lot of effort to take risks and do things out of the ordinary, for example...
straight off the first woman that walks on-stage disrobes from her tattered wedding gown and drops nekked into a pool of water. this immediately set the tone for the audience: you need an open frame of mind cuz this ain't yo average scenario.
the front fifth of the stage was a big foam mat that at certain times the actors hurled themselves upon during fits of anger. i thought this was a clever device; it reminded me of something we might do in an acting class. this is where the characters made realizations while they let go of their inhibitions.
one of the guys hurled circular saw blades into the proscenium.
i don't want to give anything away. the climax was great. it made me cry. and that takes something phenominal. but from then on it was awkward and rough. so i didnt get a good bawl... cuz the emotion was cut. it wasn't quite falling action, but dragged out. just ick.
but i still like it overall because they did some different things and i think the messages are timeless, cliché in some places, but a lot of them apply to today's world status.
oh and btw, miles didn't warn me that i was sitting in the splash zone. at one point a woman throws tomatos down on the stage floor, which was knee level for me, and i was included in a little spray to the face. refreshing. tasty.
